Supporting Speech & Language Needs
OVERVIEW
The First Nations Speech-Language Assistant (FNSL) Program trains individuals to support speech, language, and literacy development in Indigenous communities under the guidance of speech-language pathologists. Participants learn evidence-based techniques, use of technology for remote communities, child development, and collaboration with SLPs to deliver effective interventions.
The First Nations Speech-Language Assistant Program (FNSL) is designed to equip individuals to support the speech, language, and literacy development of students in Indigenous communities. The program prepares individuals to work as a speech-language assistant (SLA) under the direction of a speech-language pathologist (SLP).
Through interactive sessions, participants are introduced to evidence-based techniques and tools to support the needs of students who struggle with communication skills. Due to the unique challenges of many remote and semi-remote First Nations communities, participants also receive training in the use of technology as a way of facilitating speech-language services.
Participants consider various perspectives on child development and gain a foundational understanding of speech and language. Participants gain practical skills and develop an understanding of the role of collaborative practice with an SLP to develop and deliver effective interventions.
