OVERVIEW
The Indigenous Construction Standard (ICS) is an all-Indigenous Governance Committee represented by Indigenous housing experts. This pathway is designed to educate housing professionals on the five principles of ICS: affordability, sustainability with durable products, energy efficiency with a low carbon footprint, health and wellness, as well as culturally appropriate building practices.
The overall goal of the program is to increase capacity of housing professionals to design, develop, and build more affordable, high-performance on-and-off reserve housing relevant to the needs of Indigenous Peoples in various regions across British Columbia.
Learners of this program will understand the importance of continued collaboration and open dialogue led by Indigenous Peoples. By listening to stories, working through case studies, and analyzing building prototypes, learners will recognize the value of a holistic approach to building healthy homes and the ethical aspects to consider throughout the procurement and building process.
Learners actively involved in this educational pathway gain the knowledge and skills needed to build affordable, durable, energy efficient, culturally relevant, and healthy homes, as well as become more empowered to make decisions to meet the needs of their Community.
