Course Details
Halq'eméylem Language I is a continuation of the introductory Halq'eméylem course. At the end of the course the student will know an additional 250 high-frequency vocabulary items, will have mastered all but a few of the difficult sounds of the language and will start being comfortable communicating in present, everyday, situations using the language.

    Instructors Qualifications: Related Master's and/or Bachelor's Degree and/or designate of Language authority under auspice of instructor of record.
    Office Hours: 1.5 per week
    Contact Hours: 45

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50 - 70%, Final 30 - 50%, Total 100 %. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
  • communicate accurately in a new set of situations;

  • understand and produce most of the most difficult sounds of the language;

  • express simple ideas/opinions in Halq’eméylem; and

  • produce sentences of a variety of new types.
  • Text and Materials: In addition to the CD-Rom games and textbooks below, students will be given access to the talking dictionary of the Halq’eméylem language (to be distributed on CD-Rom, during preparation). The talking dictionary includes a language lab feature, which allows the students to record their own voices and play them back. Students will be required to spend a minimum of six hours working in the language lab as well as playing computer games that precisely match the current course topics available on Spirit of the Stó:lô.
