Youth Explore Trades Sampler Certificate

Purpose


The Youth Explore Trades Sampler (YETS) gives students a chance to explore trades further before committing to a dedicated trade. The program will provide participants with an in-depth opportunity to explore five trades: carpentry, culinary, welding, electrical and automotive technician. Students will develop safe workplace practices, skills development, and workforce skills. The learning outcomes will offer students with theoretical and practical knowledge while providing an experiential and realistic overview of trades. Upon completion of the program, students will also be more job-ready after receiving workforce certificates.


The Youth Explore Trades Sampler is a partnership between Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) and interested school districts. This is a Dual Credit system registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA).


Goals


Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:



  • Use WHMIS

  • Use First Aid

  • Understand Foodsafe

  • Describe the welding trade

  • Complete welding projects using appropriate materials, tools, and equipment

  • Describe the carpentry trade

  • Complete carpentry projects using appropriate materials, tools, and equipment

  • Describe the electrical trade

  • Complete electrical projects using appropriate materials, tools, and equipment

  • Describe the automotive service technician trade

  • Complete automotive projects using appropriate materials, tools, and equipment

  • Describe the culinary trade

  • Complete culinary projects using appropriate materials, tools, and equipment


Program Duration


The Youth Explore Trades Sampler program is a 300-hour program.


Delivery


The YETS program will be broken into sections, each comprising of 50 hours.



  • Carpentry

  • Culinary

  • Welding

  • Electrical

  • Automotive Technician

  • Work Skills (Foodsafe, First Aid, WHIMIS)


The program will provide a maximum of 16 seats and will be offered September to June during one block at the high school. Work skills training will be complete during the times the certificate instruction is available. This may be evenings, weekends or a full weekday.


A portion of the program will be taught at NVIT, and a portion of the program will be taught at a school district location, with the option of training in NVIT’s mobile trailer.


Evaluation


Theoretical concepts may be evaluated by written exams, assignments, case studies, presentations, and the completion of a journal. Practical performance is assessed by instructor observations of students in work experience and field situations and is based on final evaluations.


ITA does not track marks awarded in Youth Explore Trades Sampler programs; however, ITA does track program completion as either pass or incomplete. Additionally, evaluation results are shared with the partnering school district.


Students who complete the class should be recorded as passed.


Students who leave the class after the first week should be recorded as complete.


Students who leave the class within the first week may be considered cancelled registrations.


 


Credential


Students will receive 12 credits from the partnering school district that will be applied toward their high school graduation. There are no credentials or hours towards apprenticeship earned through completion of this program. Students will complete workforce certificates that are recognized by industry. Any credit given by the post-secondary institution is to recognize the time spent at the institution; the credits do will not transfer to another program.


Entrance Requirements


Registered in grade 10, 11 or 12 with a partnering school district.


 NVIT will work with school district staff to identify suitable and eligible students for the YETS program.

The Youth Explore Trades Sampler is intended to be a partnership between Nicola Valley Institute of Technology and a school district.

    This section provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge required to work safely in a trade environment. The certificates also provide increased employability of the students because they are more job-ready upon completion of the program.     In this module students are introduced to the carpentry trade and its various career options including residential, commercial and renovation construction. Students will demonstrate material and tool selection and usage, standard building techniques, and develop skills to create 3-D objects from 2-D plans and blueprints. More Details on this course
