Student Rights and Responsibilities

NVIT is committed to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that honours the rights, responsibilities, well-being, and dignity of all community members. As a member of the NVIT community, students are part of a respectful, engaging, and collaborative environment that encourages critical inquiry, cultural diversity, freedom of expression, and environmental stewardship.

NVIT has established policies and procedures to uphold its core values and ensure all community members understand their rights and responsibilities as follows:

Student Rights

Every student has the right to:

• A Safe and Inclusive Environment: Pursue their education in a setting that is safe, secure, and conducive to learning, free from harassment, bullying, discrimination, violence, or indignity.
• Freedom of Expression: Engage in free inquiry, expression, belief, political association, and assembly, provided they respect the rights of others and adhere to NVIT’s policies and procedures.
• Due Process and Fairness: Expect due process and procedural fairness in any investigation related to student conduct or policy violations.
• Privacy Protection: Have their privacy protected according to NVIT policy and applicable privacy legislation.
• Access to Facilities and Information: Access NVIT buildings, facilities, policies, procedures, and guidelines in a reasonable and equitable manner.
• Freedom of Association: Form clubs and committees through the NVIT Student Association and associate with organizations to promote common interests.

Student Responsibilities

With rights come responsibilities. NVIT expects students to demonstrate integrity, respect, and accountability in all aspects of their academic and personal conduct.

Every student is responsible for:

• Adhering to NVIT Policies: Abiding by all NVIT policies and procedures and respecting local, provincial, and federal laws.
• Integrity and Respect: Exercising freedoms with honesty, integrity, and respect for justice, equality, and human rights.
• Community Well-being: Contributing to a safe, respectful, and inclusive NVIT community and refraining from actions that endanger the health, safety, or dignity of others.
• Accountability: Taking responsibility for their actions, whether individually or as part of a group, and promoting NVIT's standards of conduct to guests.
• Effective Communication: Resolving academic and personal issues by communicating with the appropriate NVIT personnel.
• Accurate Information: Keeping NVIT updated on current contact information and any changes to their name.
• Health and Safety Compliance: Following all health and safety procedures in classrooms, laboratories, field trips, and practicums.
• Academic Responsibility: Familiarizing themselves with course outlines, content, evaluation methods, and timelines.
• Responsible Technology Use: Reading emails sent to their NVIT-assigned email account and using technology responsibly.
• Social Media Conduct: Remembering that online content is public information. NVIT may investigate behaviour documented online that suggests a breach of NVIT policies, including conduct, human rights, and technology usage. Disciplinary action may be taken if necessary.
