BC's Indigenous Public Post-Secondary Institute

Merritt – The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology’s newest addition, the Centre of Excellence in Sustainability, includes a state of the art teaching kitchen for NVIT’s newest program, Culinary Arts. This much awaited program commences January 7, 2019 with a total of sixteen seats to new NVIT learners seeking a profession in the culinary arts.

“NVIT is very pleased to offer our first Professional Chef 1 Certificate program commencing in January of 2019”, shared John Chenoweth, NVIT’s Associate Vice President of Academic and Community Education. “The PC1 is an exciting compliment to the new Centre of Excellence for Sustainability and will prove to be an asset to the entire community.”

During this program, learners will gain basic knowledge needed for a career in food preparation with an Indigenous essence. Future learners can expect to study safety and sanitary standards, production procedures, menu planning, inventory ordering, ingredients, nutri-tional properties and how to prepare a very wide range of foods.

PC1 instructor Chef Xavier Bauby is looking forward to the inaugural program. Chef Bauby (RSE) shares that “teaching suits me as a profession having so many years of cooking experience is not enough. In order to properly instruct my students and develop their potential, I need to explore teaching techniques. By giving back what I know to students and apprentices, I am following in the footsteps of my mentors in my own way. With all due modesty, my dream as an instructor is for my students to eventually surpass me.”

NVIT is currently accepting applications and has already set up a Foodsafe Level 1 course commencing December 7th, 2018 as an academic requirement for all future learners interested in this program.
