Celebrating Social Work Week: Casandra Schodt’s Journey at NVIT

As we celebrate Social Work Week, we recognize students like Casandra Schodt of the Mvskoke Nation, a fourth-year Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student at NVIT. Casandra’s passion for social justice and advocacy inspired her to pursue a career where she can provide meaningful support to those in need.

“I wanted the work that I do to have meaning and to make an impact,” she shares. “I have a strong passion for social justice, and it only seemed natural to pursue a career where I can offer compassion, support, and advocacy when people need it the most.”

For Casandra, an effective social worker is both a determined advocate and a compassionate supporter. “An effective social worker is resourceful, diplomatic, and empathetic while also maintaining firm boundaries and prioritizing self-care. Knowing when to ask for help is just as important as offering it.”

Casandra chose NVIT because it provided a safe and welcoming learning environment. “NVIT is the first post-secondary school where I felt confident to attend. I have never thrived in educational institutions, and as the first in my family to attend post-secondary, the process felt daunting. But after hearing so much positive feedback about NVIT, I decided to meet with an advisor. The support I’ve received from that first appointment until now has been invaluable, and I have thrived in an educational system that I once struggled to survive in.”

Now completing her practicum at Nlaka’pamux Health Services Society, Casandra is gaining the hands-on experience needed to create lasting change in her community. Her journey is one of resilience, advocacy, and empowerment.

This Social Work Week, we celebrate students like Casandra, whose dedication to making a difference is shaping a brighter future for all.
