As part of a province-wide initiative led by BC Technology for Learning Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development & Poverty Reduction, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) is proud to announce the distribution of 22 laptops to students enrolled in the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program. This initiative, which saw a total of 500 laptops distributed across British Columbia, is designed to alleviate the financial burden on students from foster care backgrounds and support their academic success.
The laptops, which are refurbished and provided at no cost, are a vital resource for students, many of whom might otherwise struggle to access the technology necessary for their studies. Without their own devices, students often rely on public libraries or other locations with limited access times, hindering their ability to complete assignments and engage fully in their education.
"This generous donation highlights the significant challenges that students aging out of foster care face, particularly in accessing the tools they need for post-secondary education," said Mary-Em Waddington, Executive Director of BC Technology for Learning Society. "Our partnership with the Ministry of Social Development & Poverty Reduction has enabled us to support these students in a meaningful way, helping them to take charge of their technology and their futures."
The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program is a crucial lifeline for many of our students. By providing these laptops, we are not only reducing barriers to education but also empowering our students to achieve their full potential. As the only Indigenous public post-secondary institution in British Columbia, NVIT is dedicated to ensuring that every student has the tools and resources they need to succeed.
NVIT has been in direct contact with eligible students to arrange the pick-up of their new laptops, ensuring that they are equipped and ready for the upcoming academic year.
