SECW-211 - Secwépemc Language Translation / Transliteration - 3.00 Credits

Course Details
This course provides foundation in theory and practice for transcribing and translating Secwépemc Language oral text. Students will transcribe and translate texts and/or tapes using the International Phonetic Alphabet. As a part of this course, students will develop touch-keyboarding skills using the Secwépemc Language font. There will be a basic introduction to linguistic processes such as phonology, phonetics, morphology and syntax. There will also be practice in transcribing and reading texts.

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50-70%, Final 30-50%. Total 100%. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  • communicate in a variety of cultural situations;

  • demonstrate a basic comprehension of Secwépemc stories associated with transformers, folk heroes and historical events;

  • demonstrate the ability tell basic Secwépemc stories, using TPR storytelling;

  • use constructions associated with subordination (relative clauses, adverbial adjuncts, clefts, etc.);
  • show in short dialogues, the ability to use target grammatical constructions; and,

  • produce common phrases.
