Course Details

This course will examine both traditional and contemporary orality of the Secwépemc peoples. This course will further expose and immerse students to Secwepemctsín, enhance their understanding and speaking ability in conversation and song. Other aspects of the course include exposing the students to various contemporary and traditional activities including celebrations, community and recreational events and everyday events.

Procedure:

Assignments 50 - 70%, Final 30 - 50%, Total 100%.
Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.

Learning Outcomes:
|
Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
demonstrate the ability to use short phrases including greetings and introductions, leaving messages, basic conversation about people, events, food and weather; phrases referring to time, days of the week, the seasons and other unique phrases;
be able to recount, describe and demonstrate an understanding of the proper protocol of oral tradition and spiritual activities;
demonstrate an understanding of the importance relationship amongst all entities;
demonstrate the ability to present a short speech orally and/or present a song in Secwepemctsín; exchange information about a particular situation, for example, a legend, historical event and places, and other general activities through Elder interaction in a natural traditional setting;
participate in oral tradition activities by community visitations or observations;
demonstrate an ability to write a short legend in the language utilizing approximately 200 words; and
demonstrate an ability to share the language with family (elder) and community members.
