Purpose
Carpenters build and repair a vast array of structures made of wood, wood-substitutes and other materials. Many work for construction companies, contractors and maintenance departments while others are self-employed. Carpenter is a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program. Carpenters assemble and erect forms for concrete, wood and metal frame construction and use plans and instruments to prepare for excavating and shoring. On smaller projects, they direct concrete placement, and install exterior and interior finish materials such as siding, doors, windows and cabinets.
Level 3 Residential Construction is designed to support apprentices registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) to continue their apprenticeship pathway in preparation to write their Interprovincial Red Seal Exam.
Goals
The program was prepared with the advice and assistance of the ITA and their associates. General areas of competency and associated learning tasks have been identified by industry and examples are provided below. Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of using construction drawings and specifications;
- Demonstrate organizational skills and describe the use of documentation in the construction industry;
- Interpret building codes and bylaws;
- Demonstrate safe use of tools and equipment including hand tools, portable power tools, and stationary power tools;
- Demonstrate an understanding of using survey instruments and equipment;
- Describe wood frame construction including the construction of stair systems and roof systems;
- Describe finishing materials and demonstrate an understanding of installing doors and hardware, windows and hardware, exterior finishes, interior finishes and cabinets, and
- Demonstrate an understanding of building science in terms of controlled heat and sound transmission and controlled air and moisture movement in buildings.
Activities & Design
This program provides students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to continue along their apprentice carpenter pathway. The program builds on the apprentice’s knowledge and skills in the construction industry including the use of tools and equipment, survey instruments and equipment, wood frame construction, finishing materials and building science. The focus is on enhancing the apprentice’s practical skill for the construction workplace.
Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will receive Level 3 technical training credit and 210 work-based -hours credit towards completion of the ITA’s Carpenter apprenticeship program.
Program Duration
The Residential Construction Foundations program is 7 weeks (210 hours) in length.
Evaluation
Theoretical concepts may be evaluated by written exams, assignments, case studies, presentations, and/or completion of a journal. Practical performance is assessed by instructor observations of students in work experience and field situations, and is based on mid-term and/or final evaluations. All courses are evaluated consistent with the NVIT Grading System.
The passing grade for all technical training and in-class assessments within a component is 70%. If a component is not completed satisfactorily, a student may apply to repeat the course the next time it is offered, providing there is space available.
Credential
Students receive an NVIT Residential Construction Level 3 certificate upon successful completion of the program. Graduates will also receive the Level 3 Carpenter Certificate of Completion from the Industry Training Authority.
Individuals who complete the ITA Carpentry Level 3 program, with a minimum of 70% on the Level 3 Carpentry final exam will receive the following credit toward completion of the Carpenter apprenticeship program:
- Technical Training: Level 3
- Work-Based Training: 210 hours
Entrance Requirements
- Be a registered Carpenter apprentice with the Industry Training Authority
- Successful completion of Carpenter Level 2
