Course Details
This course builds on content from other Health Care Assistant courses to assist students to explore concepts and care-giving approaches that will allow them to work effectively with individuals experiencing cognitive or mental challenges. The emphasis is on supporting clients with dementia, recognizing responsive behaviours and identifying person-centered intervention strategies.

    Instructors Qualifications: Relevant Master's Degree.
    Office Hours: 1.5 per week
    Contact Hours: 60
    Student Evaluation
    Procedure:
    Assignments 50-70%, Final 30-50%, Total 100%. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy. Note: Students must achieve a minimum grade of C+ in order to proceed into further HTCA courses.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
  • describe ways to organize, administer and evaluate person-centered care and assistance for clients experiencing cognitive health challenges (dementia);

  • describe ways to organize, administer and evaluate person-centered care and assistance for clients experiencing mental health challenges (other than dementia); and,

  • demonstrate an understanding of effective approaches to disruptive or abusive behaviours in clients.
