Course Details
This course is an optional addition to the Environmental Resources Technology (ENRT) diploma program and is intended for students that are in their final semester. The learning outcomes of this course will be met primarily through experience, during planned activities in and around coastal First Nations' communities. Students will experience, first-hand, a variety of natural resource management practices and Indigenous Ecological Knowledge unique to coastal areas of BC. Strong emphasis will also be placed on the application of forest measurement skills in coastal environments.

    Course Outline
    Instructors Qualifications: Master's degree in a related field. Bachelor's degree in a related field with experience will be considered. 
    Office Hours: 1.5 hours per week

    Procedure:
    Assignments: 50-70%, Final 30-50%, Total 100%. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:


    • compare forestry practices in the interior of BC with those of coastal areas, including: layout, road engineering, logging, silviculture and forest health;

    • identify plant species and communities unique to coastal ecosystems; 

    • compare Interior BC ecosystems and biogeoclimatic zones to those of the coastal areas of BC; 

    • examine the complex relationship between organisms and their environment in a marine ecosystem; 

    • observe coastal First Nations' natural resource management practices; and 

    • communicate effectively with First Nations from coastal communities, recognizing specific cultural protocols.
